THE GRAND PALACE BANGKOK

Grand Palace and The Emerald Buddha Temple

The Grand Palace is the most famous place that is a must-see for all tourists that one should not miss for their Thai travel. It is a large compound located near Sanam Luang in the very heart of Bangkok.
This is the perfect introduction to Thailand, the Buddhist faith, regal splendor and tradition.

The Grand Palace was first established during the reign of King Rama I in 1782. It has an area of 218,400 sq. meters and is surrounded by walls, the length of the four walls is 1,900 meters.
You’ll visit the key attractions around the Grand Palace including Wat Phra Kaew Temple of the Emerald Buddha, Phra Thinang Dusit Maha Prasat hall, Phra Thinang Amarin Winitchai hall and Phra Thinang Chakri Maha Prasat hall.

The Emerald Buddha Temple

The Emerald Buddha is in fact carved from a block of green jade and was first discovered in 1434 in a stupa in Chiang Rai. At that time the image was covered with plaster and was thought to be an ordinary Buddha image.
The Emerald Buddha is enshrined on a golden traditional Thai-style throne made of gilded-carved wood, know as a Busabok, in the ordination hall of the royal monastery.
The emerald Buddha has a costume for each season of the year. The ceremony to change the costume is performed three times a year (summer, rainy season, and winter) and the Thai Prince is the only one allowed to handle this most revered Buddhist statue.

On the inside walls of the temple’s compound, there are extensive mural paintings depicting scenes from the famous epic “Ramayana”. It is the longest wall painting in the world as well as one of the Unseen Bangkoks.
If you are visiting Bangkok and would like to learn more about Thai culture and monarch, start your journey at the Grand Palace. This is not just a tourist attraction spot, but it also serves as a knowledge hub about everything Thai. We strongly recommend you to visit this Grand Palace and spend at least one day to explore the entire place.
